The village on the border
The Swiss mountain village of Samnaun in Graubünden canton operates a joint ski area with the municipality Ischgl in the Federal Province of the Tyrol, Austria.
Because of the geographical location, the only access road ran across Austrian soil until 1905. This is why Samnaun became a Swiss duty exclusion area in 1892. Only Austrian customs are present at the border. Duty-free shopping in Samnaun is particularly good for cigars, high-quality spirits, cosmetics, jewellery and perfume. The village is therefore very well known for more than its winter attractions and has grown into a tourist attraction.
